The Type 181 was launched in 1969 to supply the German Army with a courier vehicle. The Beetle-based off-road vehicle came with an auxiliary heater as standard and was also sold as a government vehicle or occasionally sold to private customers. The multi-purpose car manufactured in Wolfsburg was called “The Thing” in the USA and produced until 1980, then in Mexico.
