With especially designed spoilers and skirts, darkened headlights, a sports rear muffler with 90 mm tailpipe and 18" BBS alloy rims, red brake calipers and classical GTI badges, this special edition stood out clearly from the standard GTI. The interior featured Recaro sports seats with GTI emblem, perforated leather on steering wheel, gearstick and handbrake lever as well as red and silver contrasting details. The famous golf ball gear knob also celebrated its comeback.
In addition to the visual highlights, the special edition had a lot of power under the bonnet: with 132 kW (180 hp), the output of the 1.8-litre-20 V turbo engine was increased by another considerable amount. Its top speed was 222 km/h and only 7.9 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h.
